A Mother
If I want to define who a mother is, I would gladly choose to say, ‘a mother is determination’. I can’t keep up the pace at which ideas keep running through my mind anytime I realize the worth of a woman- a mother. I can’t even imagine this world without a touch of a feminine class. Would all the men bear children? Could they truly maintain the sparkle that a woman leaves behind? Would they be able to perform all the tiring duties? Trust me, our world would be in disheveled state of affairs if only men were to assume these roles.
I read Maya Angelou’s poem, ‘Woman work’, over and over again yet, each time I read it, I’m reminded about the truth in every line in the poem. For indeed a mother is worth more than the fortunes of this world. I also cannot help but be impressed about the many things a woman is able to do given the time allotted for her survival by her Maker.
Whenever I look at my mother, her efforts and dedication, I cannot help but admire her smile that has struggled through tears and ultimately, her desperate resolve to achieve more against all odds. Is anything more admirable that this? More often than not, I wish that everyone else could look at and understand what I truly mean by this! Mothers fill up the vacuum that is left in our hearts through hurt and pain, they offer their shoulders for us to cry on and they are always ready to offer the ‘golden’ advice where necessary. A mother believes not in the loss of hope but the ability to persevere through the storms of life and make it to the apex of a successful life. What I speak of are but the obvious truths about the worth of a woman and nothing else. I do not speak even with a twinge of gender-bias but out of the awe that bursts out of my seams at the thought of everything.
Mothers always hope against hope that everything would turn out for the good of their children and that quality of selflessness and care is worthy of emulation.
Through the pains of labor
The sweat and toil
Through the tears
Even when our fears
Consumes us
Our mothers remain our mentors.
Even though our world does not present us with perfection and as painful as the truth is that there exceptions to ‘perfect mothers’. We still have our small personal worlds infiltrated by mothers that teach determination and remain the strong fortresses of our lives. We shouldn’t expect our mothers to be the perfect images we create but we should seek to be the mirror images of the images of ‘an ideal mother’ which we create. Let us appreciate women especially mothers and say no to the abuse and mistreatment that some women in our present generation are subjected to. Any time you look at your mother, see the love that she has for you despite her rebuke when you do Wrong!!!

Woman Work-Maya Angelou |
I've got the children to tend The clothes to mend The floor to mop The food to shop Then the chicken to fry The baby to dry I got company to feed The garden to weed I've got shirts to press The tots to dress The can to be cut I gotta clean up this hut Then see about the sick And the cotton to pick. Shine on me, sunshine Rain on me, rain Fall softly, dewdrops And cool my brow again. Storm, blow me from here With your fiercest wind Let me float across the sky 'Til I can rest again. Fall gently, snowflakes Cover me with white Cold icy kisses and Let me rest tonight. Sun, rain, curving sky Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone Star shine, moon glow You're all that I can call my own. |
